Root [Sprint/Cricket] Knox questions

Ok so I just got a used s3 that I plan to activate on Ting. I have been reading all this stuff about knox and I am very confused. I am also new to the whole rooting/custom rom scene.

So if you don't mind, I would like to ask a few questions.

1. So I take it that the point of installing custom roms is so you can always be updated to the latest version of Android once Samsung stops giving the s3 updates?

2. I'm currently on 4.1.2. I if I use the OTA update to 4.3 will I be stuck and unable to lets say get a custom version of 4.4 on my phone?

3. Basically I want to know if I am better off learning about roms and such and installing custom operating systems instead of taking the 4.3 update?

No, it's so you can use functions that are in the custom ROM but not the stock ROM.

That remains to be seen.

Unless there's a feature in a particular ROM that you want, you're better off leaving the phone the way it is and not allowing it to update.

Is there a way to get a pure vanilla kitkat 4.4 on this phone? I'm really hating all the samsung bloatware. Also is it true I need to first activate the phone on Ting before installing any custom ROMs?

Yes, it's true. When you first activate a phone on Ting it has to have the regular Sprint ROM, after activating you can put a custom ROM on. You can read the two replies from Ting regarding not being able to activate with custom ROMs here:

Hopefully someone can answer your 4.4 question :)
EDIT: see this thread for a KitKat ROM link.

Sprint S3s running 4.3 can, and have been, rooted and can have custom ROMs installed. . But if you plan to root, I would suggest rooting while on 4.1.2. You'll have more flexibility going forward if you don't take the OTA.
