Root [Sprint/Cricket] Rooted Sprint activation question

Hey all, I have a question not about rooting but rather about activating. If someone were to buy a Sprint phone off eBay, Craigslist etc, and it was rooted, would they be able to activate it? The reason I ask is because I Googled it and got really mixed results. One person said they bought a rooted Sprint phone and went to activate it and Sprint said they couldn't do it because it wasn't supported software or something? Other people claim they have no issues activating rooted Sprint phones. Thank you to anyone who knows more about this!

It shouldn't be an issue activating it if it's simply rooted. In fact, it's unlikely that they would even notice that it is. If a custom rom is installed with changed modem firmware, then things can get tricky but likely still not be an issue.

Thank you. I think the problems people had were regarding phones that already had custom ROMs on them but I'm sure it can't be that hard. I think Sprint should accept those phones and work with customers especially when they're obviously paying.

If Sprint was willing to have two Nexus devices run on their network (Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus), I can't imagine rooting would be that big of a deal for activating.

Hey J, I have activated multiple rooted Evo's on Sprint. As long as the phone is running the stock software / firmware bits, and it has all of the EPST codes still in the rom, it "should" work.

I don't have an S3, been dying to root my buddies and play, but he's ascared. :(

As granite mentioned, the stock software is required to correctly communicate with the network upon activation.

Basically just make sure you are on a touchwiz based rom and you'll be fine
