Sprint, reboot to turn on/off 4g?

Am I missing something here? That's like a big step backwards for mankind. I'm in Atlanta and have gotten some decent 4g coverage, but I would recover not have to leave it on all the time. Will a simple toggle widget remedy this or are we stick rebooting to preserve battery life?
