Sprint, the Evo 3D, and other similar phones.

Hello all,

I'm new to the forums so I'll apologize in advance if this is thread #2207 of it's type, and for this only being half related to the Evo 3D.

I've just switched jobs (jumped from a sinking ship onto a floating one) and my new company is giving me an Evo 4G (Obviously for Sprint) for my business phone. This is a fairly stark difference from my current Blackberries (from Verizon.) I've never owned a Droid, but have played with them and had already decided to switch my personal line from a BB to a Droid.

This also means that I lose my Verizon discount, but gain a Sprint discount for any personal lines. At Verizon I was looking forward to the Bionic for my new personal phone, but now that I get a hefty discount with Sprint, I've been looking at the Evo 3D instead.

I live in Texas, and my Verizon coverage is phenomenal. I've read that Sprint isn't as reliable or as fast, but has anyone here switched from Verizon to Sprint? Is it annoyingly slower? I'd prefer first hand specific knowledge than overall information bytes about the entirety of Verizon vs Sprint. I'm also wondering the about the difference between Wimax (forgive my spelling) versus LTE coverage and speeds.

Just from casual research, the 3D looks to be the best phone to be released for Sprint (in relation to Specs and Features) in the near future. Is this true, or are there some others that are comparable? I've read about the LG Optimus x2, but I've had bad luck with LG phones in the past so I'm a bit gunshy. I realize it's subjective, but if there are, what would make them better than the Evo 3D?

In any case, thanks in advance. It's not a done deal that I'm switching to Sprint, but it would save me a good chunk of change every year.

I am jumping ship from big red to Sprint and from what I have seen I am impressed. As for your hefty discount, are you sure you get the discount off of the phone? I get a 24% discount on a plan with Sprint and was close with VZ. VZ never gave a big discount on the actual phones.

3D is definitely best phone out on Sprint. Nothing comes close to it and it will be amazing.

To the OP... where in Texas are you? Where and how often do you travel? Texas is a big state. It's tough for anyone to say how your reception will be without at least a county to go by. Here in the midwest I haven't found a place with poor reception through Sprint.

Where in Midwest are you? I'm glad to hear that.

I lived in Texas for just over a year. While there I was a flight instructor based in Addison (north Dallas). I would typically hit 4 to 5 random cities in Texas every day on training flights with my students. Our flights would take us from Abilene, Lubbock, Tyler, Stephenville, Temple, San Antonio, College Station, Sherman-Douglas, and countless small, no-name towns scattered anywhere in between. Sprint's coverage was outstanding. You will have no trouble with Sprint in Tx. I used data quite a bit on the flights, too; I needed graphical weather updates throughout the day. I never had a problem. I'd recommend Sprint anywhere in Texas, anyday.

EDIT: And I think you're right about the EVO 3D in regards to specs, it will probably be one of highest performance phones of the year, on any carrier.

I've done some travelling through Texas. (northern panhandle, Amarillo area.) I never had any coverage issues in Texas. New Mexico was a bit spottier, but Texas was good.

i am in DFW... and been in many places in texas.. never any issues...

OP: Also, Sprint will give you 30 days to decide, you won't even have to pay for the minutes, texts and data you used that month. No questions asked return and contract terminated without any early termination fees. 30 days should be ample time to check Sprint's network coverage. So its pretty risk free.

I highly doubt you'll have any problems with Sprint though. But you'll have the piece of mind.

I'm in DFW too, and coverage is pretty good overall. I get full bars of 4G at my office, but I can see the 4G antennas on the building across the street. In my apartment I average four bars of 3G and only one or two bars of 4G on a good day.

However, out in the boonies, like Palo Pinto and Mingus, for example the only signal seems to be AT&T. In some places I can't even get a roaming signal, and my friends there tell me the only reason they have AT&T is because it's the only signal they can get.

So is the EVO 3D the next big thing from Sprint?

sadly yes. I dont find it much of an effort personally to keep customers. Big reds getting the targa later this year and that monster will eat the evo 3d alive. Who cares about 3d. Unless it projects an image off screen the concept is just stupid. Creating a 3d object inside the phone itself and using trickery and angels like the 3ds/

are you just being silly???

later.. new device.. will always... be out... that will eat old device's lunch. so?

no one or phone or carrier or blah blah.... is future safe!

The Targa is made by Motorola...good luck with that...You need a ten core CPU to make Blur not suck.

Regarding future 2011 Sprint phones beyond the E3D, I haven't seen many folks speculate about the next Nexus (after the Nexus S). You all know its coming. And if it comes to Sprint with competitive specs, and Ice Cream onboard, I'll be all over it.

To the OP, welcome to your new addiction:) As a prospective Sprint customer, I encourage you to keep your eye on the Nexus line throughout the year. The E3D will be getting all the hype from now until July, and it will be an attractive option for new customers and EVO upgraders alike (the specs are very impressive). But regarding OS updates, I think the Nexus line will be the place to be from here on out. Timely updates straight from Google may ultimately make the next Nexus phone a better value than the E3D.

The catch? The next Nexus phone probably won't be announced until late summer/fall. Months after the official release of the E3D. And we don't know for sure whether it will be carried by Sprint.

Assuming Sprint provides adequate coverage for your needs, the Nexus line ("Pure" Android with updates straight from the source) and unlimited data just might make Sprint the place to be in 2011-2012.

That is my outlook on the Nexus vs Evo3D as well.

While it is nice to see Google and Sprint getting cozy, I doubt we will see a Nexus 2 on Sprint till 2012.

Early 2012 wouldn't surprise (or disappoint) me. Sounds about right. Fingers crossed!

I'm in San Antonio and I've driven to Colorado City (to visit someone, *wink*) which is kinda in the middle of no where. There were parts I was roaming and parts I didn't get any signal at all but that was it. after that it was fine.
