Help Sprint VVM on Nexus 5

I understand that KK4.4 is using Hangouts as the default SMS app. When using Hangouts on 4.2 as default SMS, it hijacks my Sprint visual voicemail app notifications.

Anyone on Sprint that customizes anything to do with SMS should be familiar with the dreaded 9016 text. That's what happens when Hangouts becomes the default SMS app. Visual voicemail no longer handles the notifications and stops downloading my voicemail.

Anyone activate a Sprint N5 and if so, how does the voicemail work? Do we really have to go back to the stone ages with actually dialing up our voicemail?

Surely someone here is on Sprint with a new N5. What do you do for voicemail? I had one officially come in last night and sure enough, 9016 text.

I tried installing the old Sprint voicemail.apk but get an error that it cannot connect to the text-to-voice server.

Not an option as I use GV for my business number.
