Stable OS question/discussion

Hey all

I found an article in Mashable about how hackers are now targeting Androids that run Gingerbread. I like Ice Cream Sandwich and look forward to JB but I want to just ask in general: how long can an OS like ICS, iOS 6, JB etc go until it gets targeted by hackers? I understand that it has to do with time and how long the OS has been out and how many phones/tablets it's on. Just wondering. Back when I had GB I felt like it was really unstable anyway. I like ICS much better.

ICS is more stable than GB in my experience.

Regarding hacker attacks, hackers will generally try to attack phones that run the most popular versions of OS's. Why target JB when there are so few devices out there running it?
