Android Question

I have a galaxy s3 with verizon but I was wondering if the standalone gps used the data. I don't always turn on my Mobile data and I saw that I could use the navigation with just the standlone gps on. Is the GPS part of the data plan, or does it not affect the data usage?

NOtE: I use a navigation app that doesn't store the map on my phone and needs the gps on to operate.

Hi, welcome to Android Forums.

GPS and mobile data are two separate functions on your device. Switching GPS on enables a receiver which will try to synchronize with as many of the global positioning satellites as possible. It will then give your location, accuracy depending on the number of satellites sync'd to.

If you are using a mapping/navigation app which does not use maps stored on your device, like Google maps, then you need to have your mobile data switched on as well as GPS.

GPS is a freestanding function, and you can use it in conjunction with one of many offline map/navigation apps, like Route66, where the maps are stored on your device, in which case you do not need your mobile data switched on.

Confusion can arise because mobile data is also referred to as GPRS - General Packet Radio Service, whereas GPS is Global Positioning System.

Hope this helps.:)
