Starting with VM- Some questions.

I am switching to VM with the LG Optimus Slide from a pay as you go plan from Platinumtel.

I'm sort of clueless to all this so I just have some basic questions (to start).

So I buy my phone, then I buy top up card. Once I have both of these I call VM to have them activate my phone and port over my old number?

Once that is done, then on that date, or from what I'm reading the date before I go to the VM site and top up the minutes to keep the plan going?

I have seen "VOD". What is that? I think it has to do with letting time lapse?

Is there a way to auto pay each month without having VM have access to my CC number?

Thanks for any advice

You're plan date will be the date you add minutes to your phone, either with a top-up card or credit card. Adding minutes is the last thing to do, port number/activate then add minutes.

Only VOD I know is Video on Demand.

Auto pay only with a credit card.

I ordered my phone so once I get that I'll get minutes from Pinzoo. Once I have that I'm going to call VM to port my number in and activate. Then to figure out the phone.

Oh I meant ROD not VOD (duh). Still don't know what it is.

ROD was the Redirect of Death that used to happen on the last day of your month between who knows when and midnight when your new month started. Any time you'd try to surf the web using 3G, it would redirect to VM's site. I haven't heard of this being an issue for a while since they seem to have fixed the payment system, so I wouldn't be concerned about it.

You can also auto pay with PayPal, BTW.

Thanks. I think the thread I was looking at was older. Now auto pay using paypal sounds like a great idea. Are there any transaction fees and how do I do that?

There are no transaction fees per se, but you do have to pay state/local sales tax if they apply when you use PayPal as opposed to top up cards. Lemme think- it's been forever since I set it up and I don't actually have mine set to auto pay (tho it does bug me to set it that way every time I log in), and I did the entire activation online because I didn't port my #...You may be able to give the rep your PayPal acct info when you call to activate/port; if not, log into the VM website and add PayPal as your payment method. It should give you 2 choices- save the PayPal info but don't set up auto pay, or set it up for auto pay. It'll be really obvious how to do it once you're logged into your account.

I'm going to call them to activate and set it up and port my old line. I almost think I would rather just get a top up card. I do not like anyone company having my information to bill stuff. And I'm a control freak so would prefer to see what is actually happening with m account. And I can get an Email top up card for under $35.

I think others have said that I can top it up a day or 2 before my date and it will hold the money until that date. It shouldn't be so complicated.

I hear ya; it really shouldn't be so complicated, and it's actually better now than it was several months ago. I don't mind VM having my PayPal info- credit or debit card no way- but like I said I don't use auto pay so I have control over when it's used. You'll figure out what you're comfortable with & what works best for you. :)

Well I appreciate your help. I'll get the thing turned on and set then I'll see how VM works and decide how I want to pay. Oh, what happens if I am late with topping up my phone? Do I get a warning, lose my number? Is there a grace period?

I believe you have 90 days before they close your acct & you lose your #, but check with them when you call to make sure.

And I'm always glad to help when I actually know enough to be able to, lol. :)

Hey, no problem. :) Once you're done dealing with VM you get to the fun part. Have a blast with your new phone!

Thanks, slowly entering the 21st century. I just got caller ID and don't know how I ever lived without it!

Oh, I see you have an LG Optimus. I got the Slider version so I know who to bug if I have questions!

Maybe with some very, very basic stuff, but you'd be much better off posting in the Slider forum, lol. Your phone comes with Gingerbread and I'm still running stock Froyo on this thing.
