Stay with Samsung, or not?

Newbie
I've owned Samsung devices ever since I can remember. At the moment, I have a Galaxy S8. I'm not being biased, but it's probably the best phone I've had. I really like the look, and feel. The screen always impresses me. It's just beautiful IMO.

I'll be ready to upgrade soon. I was thinking of a S9, but I'd like to hear your suggestions and why it may be a good idea to consider something else. Feel free to change my mind!
 
My two cents, but you asked for it:

The Galaxy S9 received a lukewarm reception, and had modest sales. It's basically an incremental upgrade from the S8: and only the S9 Plus has the dual camera that the Note8 does.

If I can make a suggestion, you might want to wait until the Note9 is announced - expected in July or early August. Once you see what it offers, you can either pre-order that or jump on the great deals that will be available for the S9/S9 Plus.
 
Avoid LG , LG is absolutely horrible with updates and their phones are over loaded with bloatware
 
As it's been said, the S9 isn't much of an upgrade over the S8. I made the jump though. Have the S9+ now. I'm happy with it. The only other phone I would consider is an HTC. But, HTC has been rather underwhelming latley. Besides, the names of their current phones are just plain stupid. Personally, I'd rather have my ears cleaned out with a lead Qtip, than have an icrap device. apple is just plain overrated garbage!
 
This will be a really bad year for Samsung Mobile. Galaxy S9/S9 Plus sales were tepid - and the Note9 is shaping up to be a real disappointment, with minor updates from the Note8. I'm not sure how DJ Koh will explain this year to stockholders... but JK Shin was shown the door for a year this bad. I hope Samsung dazzles us in 2019 with the S10, Note10 and Galaxy X.
 
Ooh, ooh.. I just gotta S3 (Sprint/Boost)! I'm like 'we was all tripping over this once..??' 😂😂 my brother gonna chit if I can get MM &/or N on it

Mehhhhh. Lol. Come now guys I still love my droids. I just don’t like the way Google is going with Oreo. It wrecked my HTC U11 and Google focuses more on patching hacks I use for hearing issues than actually making my life easier.

No crap, works like it should, loud and a great camera. And got me the red 8+. As daily it’s great and WiFi messaging/calling works without a hitch. Something I could never to get any android of mine to do for some reason.

Don’t judge me!!!
 
I don't think many of us are thrilled with the way Android is headed. There are some elements, like Project Treble and Android P's requirement for OEMs that use it to regularly update their devices. Others, like the increasing impossibility of rooting, are not so attractive. That said: rooting is not as necessary as it was even three years ago; and many financial apps won't even run on rooted devices. But what is the alternative? Tizen? Fuschia? The Walled Garden?
 
Sometimes its the little things that bother the shit out of me. Every android is different, every OEM has a different UI. Not one Android I’ve owned is like the other. Every one has many steps over the other, as well as a few steps from the previous. That’s why open source firmware blows because any OEM and/or carrier can load it up with trash and spyware.

I’ve mostly stuck to midrange devices. Also have been able to play freely with high end devices. Not one that I’ve owned has nailed everything I expect with OS and UI and general ease of use, as how the system handles its own resources.

Apple, which I’ve hated early on, has made iOS 11 wonderful. Easy. And also somehow made their UI easy to use and look nice across the boards. And no volume restrictions. I just works well and doesn’t keep FCing all over like Android does. It just works like I want it to. I don’t need animated theming or bling. Just work.
 
It's 'the walled garden' of iOS devices that's the real deal breaker for me, also I'm not that rich. And in the PRC Apple operates a very walled garden, walled and monitored by the government. I've never had any volume restrictions on the Android devices I've had.

Perhaps because you’re outside of the US. People can sue for ear damage caused by phones and win
 
iOS devices are certainly serviceable. I have an iPad Air and an iPod nano (whatever generation they are up to with the little touch screen). Both work. The iPad is running iOS 11.3. Doesn't seem any more interesting that any of the previous versions. It works, but apps are huge and configuration is limited without jailbreaking.

I dunno @Spec2nirvash i just find iOS very boring. I suppose it may be that i haven't really experienced any of the problems with Android like you describe. Sure there have been some wonky apps that do FC from time to time, but they do the same thing on iOS. The difference is that when an iOS app crashes, there is no user feedback.

Well I’ve also grown bored. I enjoyed Android and rooting, modding. Fun stuff. But always something going wrong and having to restore a TWRP backup. I don’t load my phones with apps, just Spotify and use for texting pretty much.

Every android has a laggy keyboard, probably GBoard to blame. I’ve also had plenty of RAM issues with Nougat and Marshmallow. 2GB of ram should be enough for the job. Android system seems to use more RAM trying to save battery and optimize CPU performance. It’s silly to have an OctoCore chipset that will rarely be allowed to use more than two and you can’t do shit about it without rooting. It’s just a marketing gimmick.

Again, my needs have changed. I just want a simple phone that works, plays music, good camera and works when I need it to. Works for me needs. I use torque pro for my cars, so I still use them.

Yeah iOS theme is a bit boring but I’m over it. I prefer the working part and it’s easy to use!

- No SD card support.
- Can't drag and drop files.
- Limited to only transfer music files via iTunes to the iPhone.

I had an iPhone but really hated how I could barely do anything on it whereas on Android it feels like a complete computer on the go.

If I want to connect a keyboard and mouse to it, I can (via OTG cable or bluetooth but I prefer wired). If I want to download external apks for my Android, I can. If I want to download content and transfer it to my USB stick, I can.

Almost forgot, the newer iPhones don't even have a headphone jack anymore.
 
iPhones work fine, I could use one. And the hardware is well made. I am however with Luna in finding iOS boring (we have an iPad Mini in the house), a bit inconsistent, and the "screen full of launcher icons" is very 1990s (the moment I first saw it I thought "innovative? That's just the Palm interface" and it's barely changed in a decade).

So I don't judge someone who uses one - two of my brothers do, and many of my friends. But it's not me. And differences in UI between android devices or versions aren't a real problem: I understand the OS concepts, and have no issue with minor adjustments - it's more interesting than uniformity.

Now what was the original question again?

iCloud works much more flawlessly than Googles whatever it is. Confusing. Default iCloud settings are fine. 64 GB phone is more than enough for me.

With Android i didn’t need too much drag and drop. Don’t miss it or need it really

I don’t buy music and transfer files. I pay $10 a month for Spotify and stream everything.

And an iPhone minus a 3.5MM jack is thinner. I’ve always used Bluetooth buds. And yes I paid a shitload of money for it, but it did come with a lightning to 3.5 dongle if I really needed a wired headset.

I don’t miss a daily android. Honestly. I pay a lot monthly for YTRed, YTTV, Amazon music and Spotify. I can use a phone with 16GB storage and still have room left. Minimalist at heart!
