Steam: All games run but no video, only has sound

Installed Steam on my ChrUbuntu Chromebook and downloaded all the games i had in my own library that were compatible with Linux. they installed fine, they run, but all i get is a blank screen (the Steam overlays still show and so does my mouse pointer) but sound is still going. to exit i have to go into a terminal and kill it, or dump back to Unity with alt+tab and right-click the icon and hit 'close'. i am missing something but i do know Steam downloaded and installed all it needed before it launched and Steam runs fine. tried safe mode and still blank screen

I wish I could help, but I know zip about each component you're referring to (Steam, ChrUbuntu, Chromebook) so the best I can do is state the obvious: It sounds like a graphics card and/or video-related issue.

i did a sudo apt-get upgrade and a sudo apt-get dist upgrade and it managed to play video and sound, but the CPU overheats and it freezes up. oh well worth a try i guess.

Steam is a gaming network similar to PlayStation Network but for PC games. a lot of previously Windows titles are ported to Linux and show on here.

ChrUbuntu is the Chromebook distribution of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. out of the box it's a base system with Unity, Ubuntu One, and Chrome browser, with the Ubuntu Software Center preinstalled

Chromebook is a series of Google-branded laptops that run Google's ChromeOS, a cloud-centric operating system. the computers make excellent cheap Linux boxes

Thanks for the update. There should be some tweaking that can be done to get it working correctly.

Thanks for the explanations--although I did actually know what Chromebooks are! :p :D I've considered getting one, but only if it includes an actual hard drive.

Like a better computer lol. in Ubuntu the graphics driver shows up as 'unknown'

game plays decently for about five minutes then just freezes up. hard reboot is the only way out. can't get anywhere in Euro Truck Sim 2 though if you only get five minutes.
