Help Still new to Android - How to do a software upgrade from 2.2?

I have the Samsung Galaxy S, running on Android 2.2. I want to upgrade it to the newest version but have no idea how. I'm still new to Android so don't know where to start. And what is Gingerbread and Froyo?

Install Kies and then run the install/upgrade from there.
