I love listening to podcasts, especially tech podcasts like the Phandroid Podcast that, until recently, was posted regularly by Phandroid. (Where are you guys???) Anyway, until a few days ago, my method for finding, subscribing to and listening to podcasts involved using i-tunes to download podcasts to my i-pod. I have, however, always found that downloading podcasts to my computer, then wiring my i-pod to my computer to download the podcasts to the i-pod and worst, having to carry around the i-pod to listen to the podcasts to be cumbersome at best. Although I can't stand the i-tunes method of listening to podcasts, I had always found it to be the simplest way for me to listen to my podcasts. (As I am a non (although wannabe) techie, I have never been able to figure out how to use RSS feeds or the other supposedly easy ways of getting podcasts to my cell phone so that I could toss my i-pod.)
Having bought my new EVO on the 4th, I decided I wanted to figure out a way to get my money's worth for the extra ten dollars a month that I am now required to pay for the new and improved super duper extra unlimited "unlimited premium" data plan that the EVO requires. (Apparently, EVO's unlimited data is better than the Hero's unlimited data plan but that is another story.) Anyway, what better way to use my unlimited data then by streaming podcasts to my awesome new phone. I searched the forums and noticed people recommending Stitcher Podcast Radio as a good method for getting podcasts to a cell phone. Although I was skeptical after having tried unsatisfying phone podcatchers before, I gave it a try.
After downloading the free App, you are presented with a quick registration screen requiring an e-mail address and a password. The home page provides several podcast topics and after choosing a topic of interest, you are presented with more specific sub-topics. Each sub-topic provides several specific podcasts to listen to with the dates that each podcast was posted. If you have a podcast topic in mind such as "Android" or a specific podcast in mind such as the "Phandroid Podcast", you can skip the home page method and use any term in the provided search box to find what you are looking for.
After finding a podcast that you want to listen to, touch the podcast name and the player pops up. After a few seconds of buffering on a 3g connection (no 4g or wifi needed) your podcast begins to play without a hitch (at least that is how it has worked for me so far). If you need to stop the podcast in the middle for some reason, it starts up right where you left off when you re-open the program. Since the podcasts are streaming to the phone rather than downloaded I don't think they take up any room on the phone sd card. All in all, I have found Stitcher Podcast Radio to be a very elegant solution to finding and listening to podcasts without the need for a second device (i-pod uggh). (I also get the satisfaction of knowing that the extra ten bucks a month I am now paying for my EVO's "premium data" is not completely wasted.
Pros: Simple way to stream podcasts to android phone
Easy way to find podcasts
Plays the podcast very quickly and without a hitch on 3g
Cons: Only con is that I haven't been able to find all of the podcasts
I listen to through i-tunes. Hopefully as time passes, Stitcher will
get more and more podcasts so that I can finally put the i-pod my sock
drawer where it belongs
