Stock text messenger

[Android Question]

In the stock messenger on my Galaxy note 2 why do I continue you have an indicator of a text message even after I open the thread to read the message. The only way to make the indicator go away is to tap on the actual message not just open the thread. This is very bothersome and was not an issue on my last android phone
