Stop Apps

Please tell me there's a way to close apps, turn them off, and keep them from coming on until I open them! They're using up my battery. I'm constantly going into manage apps and force stopping them.
Is there a way to set them to only be active when you're using them? When you're not, they're off? I've went into all of my apps and turned off the background data. But I find that some come back on even after I force stop them.

Instead of manually killing apps and services, you might be better off just letting your phone's battery management do this for you. Android's power and system management (a.k.a Doze) is a lot better at doing this than you are trying to manually micromanage things. By starting and then manually killing things you're basically just making your phone work harder as it tries to compensate for your actions.
Go into your Settings >> Battery menu and in the upper right corner tap on the three vertical dots icon, then tap on Battery optimization. Now go through all your installed apps listed there.
