Help Stop Calendar Items from Appearing on the Home Screen

It's got to be in Settings somewhere. Is Locksreen one of your settings? It might be under Display.
When you say calendar items appearing at the top of the homescreen, do you mean the "at a glance" widget (clock, weather, calendar) on the Pixel Launcher homescreen? If so, long press on the widget to get access to its preferences, then you can turn off showing calendar reminders.
If it's some other widget, then something similar will apply. The difference is that other widgets can be removed, while that one is just part of the homescreen with the Pixel launcher (one of the reasons I don't use that launcher - too inflexible, and I'm not interested in some corporation deciding how I want to organise my screens and not give me the option of disagreeing).

So, as I suggested (long press on it to get preferences, then turn it off). 
Funny thing is that last time I tested it it didn't show appointments that were very far in the future, so I'd only get a short notification of the appointment that way. It was that, plus only showing appointments from one calendar, that made it not useful to me.
