Help stop ota update pop up

I have a Moto G4 (not the Plus) with Marshmallow.
I updated another one to Nougat and had problems with ghost touches that even a factory reset and barebones-no-apps-at-all couldn't fix.
So, Nougat 7.0 breaks them. I want to stick with Marshmallow until if/when Nougat 7.01 or later becomes available. I stopped update notifications but not the periodic full screen pop-up. It appears that this is not possible without having root. If I go ahead and download it, but not install, will the nagging stop? Or new nags appear?

Just an FYI

I've got the X Pure, it came with Marshmallow 6.0. Moto never updated that. Just 2 security updates.The phone's OS is still 6.0 according to settings.

Like you, I'm also debating about Nougat. I bought a G5+ with Nougat and I wasn't impressed.

BTW - I have to check for updates. Unless I do, I don't get a notice.

You will probably get pestered in any case. It should be YOUR choice anyway. Not Moto, not Google, and not your carrier.

My popups began as soon as I went through the initial setup screens.
I agree, just about all other aspects of Android have choices. I did find a Google service that can be disabled but also disables Gmail and Playstore. Maybe the update system will eventually take the hint and become bored with my refusals. Probably not.

Your notices should come from MOTO, not Google. Moto has their flavor of Android. Close to barebones, but still theirs. My Security Updates came from Moto.

Ok, I did find a post that said the G4 and G4+ were being updated by Moto.

There are so many dratted schedules out that it can be hard to find a straight list.

With the X Pure - it came with 6.0. The phones in that line that got MM as an upgrade got 6.01. X Pure never updated. I've got Moto notifications blocked. That's why I didn't get pestered to update.
 
I have blocked the Moto Update app notifications that appear in the notification area. But every two hours or so I get a full screen pop up that I tap "remind me later" to close. This full screen one is the one that I want to block. Or, if I do download, but not install the update, will the nag screen continue, or a new nag appear to actually install the uodate?
 
If you download, I think it installs.
Check other Moto Notifications - not just app.

Go to apps in the settings and enable system. There's quite a few Moto apps in there.
Just read first or check online somewhere although disabled apps can be re-enabled.
I did see something else about notices under Moto. You can't disable, but you can deny permissions from what I saw on a quick look.

You don't want to refuse permissions to an app that controls your screen!

BTW - I not only disabled some of the notices - I forced stop and cancelled all permissions.

You aren't the first I've seen that doesn't like Nougat.
I also read computer security. A lot who got Windows 10 automatically were NOT happy to put it mildly. Once bitten, Twice Shy.
 
I've blocked all Moto notifications possible. I'll see if it works. I don't want to disable anything that might break something.
 
It appears that blocking notifications in Moto Check In may be the one. I haven't gotten an update pop up for over three hours.
 
I searched the internet yesterday - most just recommended root.
Found this, and there's apparently a YouTube video which I can't see. (This browser has too many NOs to run one)

Search for block update notices on Moto. You can read and come back and ask experts here about what you have found.

I can't recommend any. So far, I haven't seen any notices on my XPRE, and any Nexus or Samsung phones I had got rooted.
What I did find was an article on XDA about de-googling the X Pure. I used it.

After all, you could remove or prevent Windows 7 and 8 from updating to Windows 10. I don't see why Android should be any different.
 
Yeah, I've disabled and/or blocked every Moto app that can be disabled and/or blocked. The Moto Update Service has a Disable button, but grayed out. I did Restrict Background Data If On Data. I'll see what happens. But I think getting root is going to be the only way to kill the Update Service.

Doesn't it have permissions? Don't give it any.
 
The only one that can be toggled is storage, which is off. The other permissions under All Permissions can't be changed. I disabled Device Management which Moto Update appears to run under or in. They don't make it easy. I can't believe that I don't have control over this.

It's the same conundrum about updating. I read a computer forum where some are using XP and not really much security, but they practice "safe hex" and avoid the problems.

Most don't. I don't update, but do buy my own security.

A majority of phone users don't do either. That reflects badly on Android or Google, plus it causes major headaches when any malware spreads.

Also people want the latest and greatest and they want it NOW!. I just want good storage and a fast processor. I don't care about any extras, I don't use 99% of them.
 
I've decided to go back to the G4 with Nougat. The occasional ghost touching is more tolerable than the update nag screens.
