Stop the Play Store from downloading 50mb+ apps?

Hi,

Quite ironic that one of my main gripes on (non jailbroken) iOS was the download limit, since I had an unlimited plan, but with my S3 I only get 1.5GB and I'm eating through it.

For example just now I purchased the Batman game through the play store online, then noticed my phone was part the way through downloading it... and it's 1.7GB!

Is there anyway to stop it from downloading things like this? Even stopping automatic downloading of all apps (though it's handy) until I get onto WiFi like the updates would be good.

Thanks :)

Just open the Play Store app, hit the menu button, and then settings. You can set it to not automatically download updates or you can have it only do updates over wifi.

Thanks guysm that option is already selected though - the problem isn't updates (they're fine and only download over WiFi) it's actually the initial download of the application itself!

I know I could wait until I'm home to install them, but in the case of Batman today, if I waited it could be back to full price.

However, I suspect that the cost of transgressing your data allowance will cost you more than the full price of the app. Especially since any data usage from now until your monthly data reset will take you further into the red...

Oh, for sure - the data charges on my new contract are ridiculous! That's why I want to stop from them downloading until I'm home :)

Yeah, if you buy anything, cancel the download, as long as you've bought it, it won't be gone from the list. You can download it when you are at home.

Anything more than 50MB downloads suppose to trigger the option to download via wifi only. That's direct from the play store or Samsung Apps.

The problem in this case is that the download isn't that big. I believe you only download the APK file which is relatively small. Then when you launch the app, it will request you to download the game data. This is what happens for all my gameloft games so far. Anyway, you actually don't have to download the data file straight away. As long as you purchased it and downloaded the APK file, you can download the data file anytime. Its still considered purchased at the discounted price.

Cheers

hell, even if the app is free, if you start the download, and then cancel it, itll still be in your "All" column, so you could use this to sort of bookmark large free apps that you want to try out when you have wifi access. i do this all the time since i live in a small town and data speeds here are absolute garbage.

this is not the case sometimes. take Horn or NOVA for example. both of these games are well over 1.5 GB just from the Play Store. then it will get larger once you launch the game.

Not in this case. I also purchased TDKR and it downloaded the data automatically straight from the Play Store without me ever opening the game.
