Stop Wallpaper Compression?

I have designed a perfectly nice wallpaper for my phone. However when I set it as a background, the smooth gradients become hideous banding. How the hell do I stop it compressing?

Is it compressing, or did you design it for higher resolution than the phone screen has?

If it's compressing, design it for the final displayed size.

My screen is 1280 x 700 and that's what I'm designing it for. It reduces gradients to bands yet the stock wallpapers seem to be high res images.

Rooting should make no difference. Are you using the stock launcher or something different? Some launchers, like ADW, make wall papers look terrible.

I'm not sure what you mean by a launcher but I'm using the stock ROM.

I've tried Wallpapyrus and it's certainly an improvement, however, a regular gradient still doesn't come out perfect.

The launcher is your home screen, ya know your icons and pages and stuff. There are lots of different ones. Since you didn't know what that was then you're using the stock one still. If you ever want to make your phone look different check out Nova launcher in the play store. You can install themes to change your icons and customize the phone in a lot of different ways. Nova is my favorite but there are tons of different launcher replacements.

Check out this thread to see what you can do if you use a different launcher.

I've never experienced what you're describing. Can you post a screen shot?

Actually, Wallpapyrus IS displaying the image exactly the same as the original. I just noticed that even though I can make perfect gradients on my MAC they just don't show up as smooth on the s3, even in the gallery. So I guess it's 'problem solved'.

I hadn't thought of using a different launcher (yes, I'm on stock). Does Nova require root? I might look into it in the future, right now I'm too busy learning Tasker!
