Shoot... Chrome is ALWAYS preinstalled on Android devices, I've never seen official stock Android without it.. ever.
Technically the Chrome app is not actually a part of the Android operating system, it's just a browser app after all. If you're thinking of how Internet Explorer was for a time tied into directly into the Windows operating system, it's not at that level. But Google would prefer everyone to use Chrome as their default browser so it is set up as the default browser for every Android device. Luckily for those who prefer other alternatives, we can install and set our own preferred browser app to be the default. As for those space usage numbers you mentioned, try clearing the Chrome app cache.Android newbie here. Is the Chrome app part of the operating system and is there a way to reduce the space it takes up. On my tablet it takes 348MB and on my friends phone it takes over 1GB.
I have Chrome disabled on my Pixel 2. There is still an "android system webview" app even on that most Googly of devices (though these days that's so big that I'm sure it's Chrome-based itself - it's much more bloated than it used to be).
On mine it's a huge app (i.e. has an update that wasn't part of a system update) which is automatically enabled if you disable Chrome. If you enable Chrome then Webview is disabled (with no enable button) and Chrome takes over that function.
