Help Strange Garminfone Problems

This is my mother's phone, and she isn't great with any sort of technology, so getting good descriptions of problems out of her is difficult. Anyhow, there are a few problems that she's been having with her phone recently.

1. When she's driving on the highway, the GPS automatically turns on, and starts giving her directions to some random location she has never tried to get directions to.

2. The screen sometimes goes black and it's impossible to start or end calls. This sounds like a proximity sensor problem to me, but maybe there's something else going on.

I have updated the phone to 2.1. And she said that the folks at the TMobile store reset it for her a few days ago. She said it got worse after the 2.1 upgrade. And the T-Mobile reset doesn't seem to have helped at all.

1: she can hit STOP and the gps will no longer send her. It sounds as though there is an unfinished entry on the go...check the manual if needed.

2: just tap the power button for a split second and the screen comes back on.

3. If she is really in a fix...shut the phone off. Plug it into a power source (wall outlet or computer). Hold the D-Pad left while powering on the phone. "Wipe Userdata" should appear on the screen. Let it run. The phone should reboot when its done. Check the manual on how to do a master clear if that did not work. Master clear wipes all of her data though, right back to factory fresh.

Hi
Since these phones are old by Tmobile standards, they dont really support them anymore and they are getting up there in age. I started having weird things then it shuts off out of no where. If you keep getting black screen and have to turn it on again it might be the battery. With 2.1 go to the help icon with the question mark and when you click it it updates with a help app for the device and it tells you if the battery has a problem. On mine the battery shows full charge but this reported the battery may not be performing. Shout out to Spazmogen! Its a shame Tmobile got rid of the forums the way they were.
