Strange issue that rendered new HTC One Mini almost useless

Hi all,

I got a new HTC One Mini about 6 weeks ago, transferred my back up from my existing HTC over and all was fine. In the first few days I noticed some issues while typing with SwiftKey, it was sometimes fine and other times extremely buggy and laggy. Other than that there were no issues.

A few nights ago I was watching a YouTube video with no issue when suddenly it froze and the phone freaked out. I couldn't even close the YouTube app, and had to restart the phone. From there on it was painfully slow, it would take upwards of 20 seconds for keyboard to appear when typing, my home screens would take forever to load, and it was pretty much too frustrating to do anything.

I uninstalled SwiftKey and all other non stock apps, cleared caches and checked for malware. This did not help. I went to back up my phone on the PC so I could do a reset. When the PC detected all images and videos on my phone, there were over 6000 (strange as there were only 2000 in my gallery). The extra photos were largely Internet memes, pictures of celebrity faces and typical Internet-popular animals like sloths. I had not downloaded these, nor anything suspicious that I'm aware of.

Upon deleting them using the PC, the phone went back to normal completely. No more issue with SwiftKey bugs either, and those had been there pretty much since day 1.

The phone was brand new and factory sealed. It's working perfectly now and I didn't even have to reset it. Anyone heard of this? What happened?
