Help Strangest hardware or sofware related problem for sound?

Hi,

Here is my problem:

When I play sounds using my headphones (which I tested and work fine), some frequencies are very quiet, while others are amplified. I had this problem in android 2.2, just appeared out of nowhere, it was quite severe. I recently updated to android 2.3 which improved it, but the problem is still there.

Strangely also when I use speakers there doesn't seem to be a problem.

But if it was only hardware, why would it improve with update?

I had this problem for a while , then noticed that I wasn't pushing the headphone jack all the way in
I stopped using stock release a long time ago though

I know that can be an issue, but I'm putting it in all the way. When it's not put in all the way, only on headphone works but it works correctly.
