Strategy for finding new phone w/out contract

Anyone have tips for where to look for phones without contracts? I've got a Samsung Charge and while it was OK at first its 2 years+ old and just isn't cuttign it anymore. I

I want to keep my unlimited so I've been looking for the Galaxy SIII but it seems like even without a contract the prices is upwards of $500. For that much it would make more sense to drop the unlimited and take the subsidize phone.

I have not used it, but if you are willing to have a used phone, they say go to Swappa.com

They show Verizon SIII for $300 - $450.

Nothing wrong with this forum's Classified section either. What I like about a forum like this is that you can see a member's post count and get an idea of what kind of person he is. Nobody lasts long on a forum if he has cheated folks in phone sales/buys.

Craigslist is fraught with peril. Even if you deal with somebody in person, too many stories are floating around about devices reported lost/stolen AFTER the deal by the original owner who is looking to get a free replacement via insurance in addition to pocketing your money. eBay is a bit better, but not much.

I've bought 4 phones off ebay and 1 off cowboom.com a best but outlet they've all worked well and been just as described. In ebay look for at least 99% good feedback.

This is why I recommend people meet their Craigslist seller at the phone store and have them verify it's not stolen. Then have the phone transferred into your name while the seller is still there before handing over the cash.

If going craigslist...Always meet in the store to have the carrier verify the phone has a clean ESN. They can also physically see the sale go down and get it on your account before you both leave

If buying online... Its all about whether or not you trust the seller. Look for feedback from prior sales

These days you could get an s3 with accessories from anywhere around $225-300.

That's what they're going for here anyway
