A friend of mine contacted Verizon about getting a signal booster. They told him he would need to go to a Verizon store & buy one. Then they told him if he renewed his contract he would get more bars. This sounds like a crock to me. Could there be any truth to it??

What is available from Verizon is a mini cell site package called a "Network Extender". I own one myself. I purchased it 4 years ago when I moved to my current location deep in the rural area of NE Oklahoma where no Verizon signal was available unless you drove at least 20 miles from my home.
The network extender provides me with a bonafide Verizon signal that the phone sees as "Network Extender". It gives a good solid 5 bars signal for about a 350 foot radius of my home office.
It has it good points, and its' bad points.
Upside, the phone never looses the cellsite.
Downside, it must have a good wideband internet connection. If that internet connection suffers from interference, lost packets, etc... the cellphone will drop the call. This is NOT normally something to worry about, but it has happened to me because I am rural and have a ADSL subscriber phone line for internet service on AT&T. funny huh? AT&T provides me internet for my Verizon Network Extender.
Downside, when leaving home and driving away, the phone will drop the call because it does not know where the next closest "real cell site is".
The reverse of that is also true, I can be talking to someone while driving into my home. All is okay until I walk into my office where the Network Extender is located, and poof! the call is dropped as the Network Extender's more power signal takes over.
The ONLY REASON to purchase a Network Extender is IF you wish to have your own carrier's signal in your home or office. That might be because you don't like to use roaming mode. It might be simply that no signal is available regardless of carrier brand.
It is a very viable solution for a specific problem (low signal strength), but nothing like the BS that salesman is promoting to you. There is no requirement for you to renew your contract with them. You pay for it out of pocket, it is yours period... I turn it on, or off at my leisure.
IIRC, back 4 years ago, I paid something like $240 for it up front. One billing and it was done.
You can get it at the store, or you can call Customer Service and they will mail you one. I had mine mailed to me.
