A third-party launcher can do that for you. Try Nova Launcher: Go to Nova Settings > Look & feel > Navigation bar and turn off Navigation bar.
Works on mine. Might be a Nova Prime option though. I paid for the full version years ago.

Does the G6 not have an immersive mode (for some apps which request it)?
If so you can use an app like Custom Navigation Bar or Shortcutter to allow you to toggle it on or off yourself (in any app, not just the launcher). That's what I've done with my (unrooted) Pixel, which also doesn't come out of the box with an option to hide it.
