Swap Hero For Desire?

I'm new to the smartphone world. And somewhat lost...

I got an HTC Hero from GCI last month. The phone cost me nothing with a two year contract. But I am seriously considering returning it tomorrow. GCI has announced they will be offfering the HTC Desire and the Motorola Milestone.

I'm thinking of returning the Hero and waiting till August (my best guess) for a Desire. I'll have to pay a $25 restocking fee and the Desire will likely cost me around $200 with another 2 year contract.

I have hopes the Desire will be running Froyo or at least be at the front of the line to get the upgrade from 2.1. Realistic?

I am under the impression the Snapdragon and the new OS will make browsing even better than it is on the Hero. True?

Or am I being a total idiot...

At 60 years old I did not expect having to go back to school to learn how to use my telephone.
 
The Droid is supposed to get 2.2 this summer at the same time at the Droid X. I'm assuming that means the same for the Milestone since they're essentially the same device.

Are you big on customization? Do you want something to root and overclock?
 
I'm fairly computer literate but am brand new to the smartphones as my income has taken a hit in the past couple of years. I live on what I used to pay in income tax and didn't think I could afford one of them. But recently I found a way to swing one.

I haven't rooted the Hero, as I am under the impression I can't go back to a factory ROM. My carrier is GCI/ Alaska Digital.

But back to my OP, would the Desire be a reasonable upgrade from the Hero? My understanding is the Hero will never be offered a factory upgrade to Froyo but the Desire probably will.

On this, they claim the Hero is expecting an update to 2.1 in August. The Desire is already running 2.1 I believe and they're all waiting on a Froyo update.

Thanks, but my understanding is the Hero is not going to get an official upgrade to Froyo. My Carrier, GCI, has told us they expect to offer the 2.1 ROM for the Hero in the next week or so.

After spending a lot more time looking into this I've discovered I want a Droid X which is not going to be offered here in Alaska anytime soon.

Also my phone is a CDMA as is the Desire here.

Again, I'm trying to decide if switching to a Desire from a Hero is worth $200 or so and waiting a month or two.
 
Honestly, I would go with the Milestone that you mentioned in the OP. In the month or two you'd be waiting, they'll probably have a phone released with Froyo.

(I'm biased towards Motorola)
 
Thanks for the reply! You prefer the Milestone even though it's got a slower processor? If I give the Hero back tomorrow I'll probably be waiting till August to get either the Milestone or the Desire. There are times it seems like Alaska isn't a REAL State in the Union...
 
From the view of hardware, the desire is better than hero. The screen size is 480 * 800, but the hero just get 320 * 480. The Memory too, the Desire's 576M, and the desire's is 288M.

From the view of software, the os version in desire is android 2.1, it's easier to update to froyo. But, anyway, software is not a problem, the hardware is.

Thanks Brinkley! I didn't realize the screen was so much bigger. Are you sure? One thing I've discovered is Otterbox doesn't make a case like the Commuter I have on the Hero right now...
 
I haven't read the entire thread so I might've missed something but this is exactly what I've done - gone from Hero to Desire and can't be happier.

Not that there's anything wrong with Hero - I had the money and wanted a faster phone. Now I dont' have to worry how many apps are open or wait for pages to load - its super fast this phone.

Not to forget better bluetooth functionality & google navigation.


If you've got the money then do it.
 
Thanks! I think I'm going to take the Hero back and give them the $25 restocking fee. When the Desire is offered in the next couple of Months I should be able to get one for about $200. I HOPE it gets the Froyo upgrade...
 
Thanks for the reply! I took the Hero back today. I'm on the preorder list for both the Desire and the Milestone. The Milestone would be free but there's no word on how much they are going to charge for the Desire with a two year contract.

I'm using a somewhat beat up Rokr till they get here in "late Summer"...
