So in my area Verizon doesn't have any towers so I'm roaming and I only get a 1x connection. AT&T have 3G here. Is it worth switching to AT&T? Is the Android experience better or about the same on AT&T's side?

What about rooting and ROMing? Would that solve the issue? They make it so you can only load apps from the market. I hate AT&T, but stuck with them until a good dual core comes out. Every carrier seems to be good around my area, thank god...

Yes it does solve the issue
I heard from students in the dev class that it didn't, but I could be wrong... I also heard AT&T had a plan to make it easier for developers...
