Switch phones and dropping data plan

I want an android phone but I can't win the argument with my wife about paying for the data. She insists we don't need it. A guy at a cell phone store told me to do the following. I'm looking for advice to find out if it will work.

1. get the android with Verizon's $15 data package.
2. pay for it for a couple of months.
3. call Verizon and switch back to my current feature phone and cancel the data package.
4. Wait a couple of days and then long on to Verizon's web sire and reactivate the android phone and use the WiFi only for data.

Would that work? Is it ethical? I'm not using their data so it seems ethical.

Welcome to the forums, kliends.

Your question is a lot more carrier oriented than device oriented, having to do with plans, etc, so I've moved it to the Verizon forum where it's more likely to attract informed responses for you.

I believe that the VZW systems will just add data to the account since it is a smartphone. All of their documentation states that a data plan is mandatory with smartphones.

Correct. It is all tied into the device esn so it will automatically be added at the time of the switch.
