Switching over...

Hey guys. I am a current iPhone 4 user and am planning on switching over to a Razr Maxx HD soon. I got a few questions about it. The majority of them are music related. I have an old ipod, several years old, the screen is scratched so bad that its becoming hard to see. I am wanting to get the Razr Maxx HD and eliminate the need for a second device in my pocket all day and I am wondering the best way to do that. I know the internal memory on this phone is 32GB. Is that max or can a card be added to increase that space to 64GB? I have around 50GB in Itunes right now so 64GB would be plenty.

I have also considered Google Play and Spotify, Luckily, I have the older Verizon plan that has Unlimited Data so I can keep that if I want to. The only downside is I have to buy the Razr Maxx HD for full retail.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

One thing you can consider is converting and uploading your music to Google Play and with that you can change what music is on your device at any time pretty easily. You just untag it for offline use if you don't listen to it much and any time you have a data connection you can still stream it or re-download it if you just HAVE to hear it one more time.

I did the same thing as you - went from an iPhone 4 to a RAZR HD MAXX. I couldn't be happier. You can add a external micro SD card - which I also did. I did not have any iTunes music as I jumped on the music subscription bandwagon several years ago. I do have several hundred CD's that I ripped and so I have a bunch of ripped music on my player for those rare occasions that I cannot access the cloud.

I also paid full retail for my RAZR so I could keep the unlimited data plan. I have not been disappointed with the purchase at all and do not miss my iPhone at all, especially the horrifically awful iTunes!

I dont have anything against the iPhone. I am just bored with it. I could get the new one but it wont be any different from what I have now. An extra row of icons is not worth paying 50 dollars for, let alone full retail.

Is there a maximum capacity for the Micro SD card you can put in the phone? I don't even know what sizes those cards are available in. I don't do photography or anything that requires a card so I have never bought one. I read somewhere about some older model Droids that can only accept up to 16GB cards.

I loved my iPhone as well - just hated iTunes. Like you, I waited for iPhone 5 to come out to see if they once again raised the bar - they did not. So I 'test drove' the RAZR HD MAXX for a couple weeks it the contest was over. Android finally has caught, and in many ways, surpassed iPhone.

I am using a 32 gb SD card. I'm not sure if there are limitations. I thought I read somewhere that you can go up to 64 but I'm not positive. I'm sure you can find that info with a simple search.

Since you have so many purchased iTunes songs I think the other poster's idea was good about uploading it to the Google cloud. I thought about it but since I already have the stuff I really want ripped to several computer storage locations, it's just as easy for me to load what I want (usually about 8 gig worth) and then count on the cloud for the rest.

I tried all of the major streaming radio programs, both free and paid versions. Spotify was the most powerful, but also the most expensive at $10/month. For free versions I like IHeart radio as it gives the least amount of intrusive ads. Pandora, Slacker and Spotify have too many ads that come on between songs.

Mostly, I use Rhapsody as my daughter has a subscription and it works great. It's expensive at $15/month, but with that you can get up to three computers and three portable devices to have access. I stream music from the cloud 8 hours a day at work with no issues on the 4g lte network. Gotta love that huge Maxx battery!

I love Itunes except for buying music. I've been using a mac for years so i'm used to Itunes being the primary source for music. When I buy music in MP3 form, I get it from Amazon. Most of my collection came from CDs I had ripped. I used to own well over 3000 CDs that I acquired over many years working at a record store. Ive lucked out a few times with that too, A lot of times music would come in and it would be in the computer wrong and it would ring up for 1 penny and company policy if someone wanted it we had to sell it to them. I spent an entire summer ripping all of that music and I burnt up a CD-Rom drive in the process. I keep the stuff I listen to most in Itunes just in case I want to listen to it, its there.

I was just thinking about Spotify because you can search for whatever you want to listen to and for the most part its there. I was a Sirius subscriber for close to 10 years and it is up to $17 and change a month now so $10 a month isn't bad at all.

I've been looking and I see you can put the 64GB cards in and they will work but have to be reformatted in the phone. I wasn't sure about that because what I read before the phone I was looking at (I think it was the first Droid Razr) couldn't handle the MicroSD XC class cards. Again, I am not familiar with these cards at all so I don't know what the difference is between all of them. But if the Razr Maxx HD can handle the larger card, that answers all of my questions. I can put my entire music library on the card and still have room to spare, and keep the Internal phone memory free for everything else.

Wow - you are literally the only person I have ever heard say they love iTunes! Sounds like you have a good plan. Use the 64GB SD card for your ripped music and Spotify for every thing else. If I didn't have the free Rhapsody access I would likely use Spotify as well.

Just to add, if you download winamp(free) you can sync your entire iTunes library including playlists right onto your phone.

I also came from iPhone 4 and it was never a fun phone. Android is a zillion times more customizable.

Yea thats why I want to switch. The only way you can really customize an iphone is if it is jailbroken. I used to have winamp back when I used a windows machine. Ever since my first ipod probably 10 years ago now i've been using Itunes. I've just gotten used to it. I will do more research as far as the music apps and syncing go, closer to when I get the phone. I don't even have a google account yet so I have to start there.

Officially the capacity is 32 gb. There are people who are using 64 gb. You have to format with a computer using fat 32. Just remember after formatting it will be less than 64 gb.

Yea it will require the system files that will take up a little bit of space. Whatever is left over from the 64gb card should be plenty for 50gb of music. I seen some videos on youtube of people putting the cards in the phone and it will say damaged memory card and you're supposed to turn it off and back on and go to settings and format memory card and you are good to go. Just to increase my chances of success I will get the sandisk mobile SD card. After I get everything. (Beginning of February) I will post and let everyone know how it performs.
