Swype keyboard question

kunzy

Newbie
For some reason out of nowhere my microphone on the Swype keyboard doesn't do anything when I click on it. I like to use this feature to speak into phone instead of using keyboard to send text messages. Anyone know how to change this back or what to do

Hi Kunzy,

I didn't answer this yesterday because I don't really have a direct solution for you and I don't want to give unsolicited advice, but nobody else is answering so hopefully I can give you some hints...

The reason why I can't directly help is because I don't use Swype or even a stock keyboard. Instead I use Swiftkey (free from the Google Play Store) and I can't really live without it now. I just tested and its mic button works for me. I would suggest you download this keyboard and give it a try. If nothing else it will demonstrate whether the voice feature is globally broken or if it is just the keyboards connection to it.

If the Swiftkey does not work, make sure that nothing got updated recently (look in Google Play's recently updated list). If anything was updated report that here. Also tell us which Android version you are on (KitKat 4.4.4 or Lollipop 5.0.1) as it could be that an OS upgrade caused the issue. You could also check to see if the voice search has been badly configured/disabled. Look in settings under Language and Input.

Remember it is a Google service, so whispering iPhone sucks a few times may also help.

Good luck...
Eric.

PS: the whispering was a joke ;)

Thank you for your response. I'm using a Verizon note 4 with lollipop 5.0.1. I checked play store nothing looked like it updated in reference to the keyboard. So I moved on and downloaded swift key and tried the mic. It asked if I wanted to download voice search which I did than Google wanted me to activate it on this device which I did. So the mic works now on either keyboard (Samsung or SwiftKey) (swypes mic isn't on keyboard anymore) but the mic is WAY different. After speaking into it it brings up a box of different things I may have said and wants me to choose. A little more difficult when I'm driving compared to the way the old mic worked.

Ok, so we know that the functionality is still there, if not changed for the worse. I would get into contact with the author of the Swype keyboard (which I assume you installed yourself) and ask them where the mic symbol went. Most devs are keen to help and it is most likely a settings issue.

I wish I could help more, but have rolled back to 4.4.4 and don't use the same keyboard.

BTW: Swiftkey also supports Swype input, but I have no idea how it works since I have never used it (I am somewhat of a creature of habit).

Regards,
Eric.

Thanks again Eric for your help I really appreciate it. I've been using SwiftKey and have to say I'm really starting to like it. Debating whether or not to get a hold of swype

Eric...what's the difference between
Swiftkey and the Samsung keyboards? I've used both and find both working fine.

Hi JM,

The biggest difference is that one comes with the phone and the other is downloaded free from the Goggle play store (used to cost something but they made it free after I bought it, thanks guys), however, what I like the most is the predictive word completion. Swiftkey tries to determine based on current and historical context what you would most likely type next. Some people may find this a bit spooky, but I think it is pretty cool.

Beyond this, I have so little experience with the Samsung keyboard that I could not really compare. I searched for a replacement after a few hours as I completely hate the look and feel of the stock keyboard. This is why I love android really... don't like something, change it.

Regards,
Eríc.

I also bought swiftkey before it became free. I think I will give it another try to see if it's a worthwhile change.

No! not worthwhile for me. The samsung keyboard has each letter or number in an individual box. ..very easy to me to type my msgs...the other keyboards do not delineate the letters as well and the delineation makes it much easier and faster for me to type on the phone.

I can normally type (hunt and peck) about 20 words a minute. But with SwiftKey I can type about 75 wpm. The longer you use it, the better it predicts.
Plus it has a lot of themes.
I'll never use anything else.

You can set it to put a line of numbers above the letter key if you go to settings in Swiftkey. Phil

I also turn on arrow keys, great for when my fat fingers just cannot seem to hit the correct pixel to locate that mistyped character and I need to shift the cursor back/forth/up/down one space. It is also possible to float (undock) the keyboard in case you need to see something that would otherwise be hidden under it.

Don't know if the stock keyboard can do these things, but I use them a lot.

Eric.

I had the same problem and found the issue in another forum. I had gone through Apps and disabled everything I thought frivolous. Turns out Google Search is used by android to process voice to text. Re-enabling it fixed my problem in multiple keyboards including hangouts and swype.
