Sync Control w/Google Reader?

Maybe this is just how Android phones work, but- I like that my Calender and Google Mail is always up to date (assuming I don't have sync turned off to save battery). But, I don't obsessively read my RSS feeds in the new Google Reader application, and it bugs me that I might be draining battery by it trying to sync. Is there a way to tell it to only sync when I want it to?

Have a similar question. I turned off sync on mine (Settings ---> Accounts & sync) and planned to just refresh manually.

I noticed it is still updating even with Sync turn off. Maybe it is because I placed the Unread Count Widget on one of my home screens? Replacing it with a shortcut to the feed and will see what happens.

Any input would be appreciated.
