Sync disconnects after about 10 seconds

HTC Desire - no carrier(SIM free). Connects to Windows XPSP3 running as a VM under Ubuntu. Offers the chance to sync, starts then stops & disconnects after a few moments with no data transferred. Worked OK direct to XP on a different machine.
