Sync email - K9 Mail

I have used K9 Mail for years with no issues (Samsung phones). With the V20 it says that Sync is disabled and I only get emails if I open the app and refresh it. When I go to Account & Sync I can add an account to sync, but am limited to Gmail and the default mail client. How do I setup a 3rd party app like K9 Mail to sync?

I'm assuming you're referring to Gmail as your email service. Yes? First I'd disable the Gmail app and default email app using 'Force stop' and 'Clear data', and then uninstalling if it's allowed or just leave them both idle. You might also want to 'Force stop' and 'Clear data' on the K-9 Mail app so when you restart the app it's starting up in a clean, new state. You shouldn't have to do much after that, as it will attempt to auto-configure itself to default Gmail settings once you enter your email address and password:

On the chance that doesn't work, you can manually enter the required info:

As for Google's XOAuth 2.0 implementation, you might find there's less friction using K-9 (and other non-Google email clients) by: https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps

OK, that's not out of the ordinary. Hopefully whichever service is hosting your email should have a page on their site with the necessary configuration settings to use when setting up an email client. Then in K-9 Mail, go to its Settings >> Account settings >> Fetching mail >> Incoming server and type in the required info. After you confirm things are working correctly (basic receiving and sending of emails) don't forget to go back into the Settings menus, there's both Account settings and Global settings, each with a lot of options to customize K-9's interface.

I think it's something more than that. I've used this email setup for 10+ years on various phones, etc. I am able to get emails using K-9, I just have to go in and refresh to get them. When I do, across the top it says Sync Disabled (or similar). The polling is setup for 1 min. So, I am able to get them, it's just not polling correctly. I was wondering if this was something where I needed to add an account to sync (via settings on the phone) or if something else is going on.

I appreciate you taking the time to work through this with me.

On your V20 try whitelisting the K-9 Mail app in Doze. (...and maybe set the polling back from 1 minute. That's quite frequent, unless you're really heavy into email.)

Also, recheck K-9 Mail's Settings >> Global Settings >> Network >> Background sync that it might have been inadvertently changed from Auto or Always to Never.

Stupid question - where do I find Doze, I'm having no luck.

As for K-9, it was on auto and I changed it to Always - just in case. And I had it set to every minute simply because I wasn't getting emails and I adjusted it all the way down to 1 minute. I can easily adjust it to 15 minutes or whatever. Just testing.

Sorry, was traveling yesterday and wasn't able to really test it or update here. From what I can tell whitelisting the app has fixed it. Thanks so much for your help and checking in.
