Help Syncing Contacts with Google kaput

OK, I've been ALL over the internet and this forum trying to figure this out.

My contacts will no longer sync with my Google account. Calendar sync works fine.

When trying to sync contacts, I get an error saying, "sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly." But, it won't be, apparently. My last successful sync was September 24th (of this year).

I can find complaints about this issue going from 2010 to present day. NOBODY seems to know the answer.

Well.. there's one answer, but I'm not sure I want to do it (yet). It suggests going into the Applications Manager and clearing the data in Contacts Storage. My concern (which is not addressed in any of the instances of this particular advice) is what this actually does. Does it erase all the contacts in my GS3? If so, then when I re-sync from my Google account, I will have permanently lost any contacts I entered directly into my phone since the last successful sync?

Please help! Thanks!

Ok... weird...

If I change or add a contact to a group on my phone, THAT get's synced to my Google account.

If I add a contact in my Google account (from my computer), it gets synced to my phone.

But contacts added to my phone aren't getting synced to my Google account. And, I'm getting that little red "!" and the error at the bottom about it "experiencing problems..."

I don't know why the red mark, but your contacts have to be stored as Google for them to sync with it. They can't be phone or Samsung or whatever. Check that out. If they are not, I think there are ways of exporting and changing them but I am not sure.
Good luck!

Was having exact same issue. Mine quit right after editing my contacts on the phone. Gave up trying to find answer. Today I was doing more editing in contacts and when done exported to usb storage - moved to installed sd card then removed from phone and inserted into adapter then usb cable to computer. Deleted all contacts in Google on the computer and imported contacts from card. When I was done I noticed that I was no longer getting the red exclamation mark and was syncing again. My problem started the day after upgrading to Jellybean - but I think it was just coincidental - something I did while editing contacts caused it.

OH SHIT! I just lost everything (by following this advice). I am not happy. I'm not sure how it happened. But, I ended up with my Google circles as the only contacts on my phone (even when I displayed ALL my contacts).

Thank goodness I have Backup Pro. Restoring my Contacts now. Phew!

Took several minutes, but all my phone contacts are back. I made sure all my Google contacts were deleted. Then synced my phone with google. Seems like it worked.

Now, I'm going to add a sample contact on both google and my phone and see if they sync up.

OK... added sample contacts to each end. Ran the sync. No errors! Hooray!

BUT... The contact I added on Google transferred to the phone. However, the contact I added on the phone did NOT transfer to Google. What's up with that?

I also just figured out that the same thing happens with my calendar. Anything added on Google appears on my phone. But, calendar events entered on my phone do not appear on my Google calendar. AAaaaaaagh!
