syncronizing with gmail

I have tried many things to test how how the synchronization works with gmail contacts...the email works fine but the contacts work a little different.

The main question I have is that currently on my phone I have a few contacts, but on my gmail account I have a full list of edited contacts just waiting to be synced. The contacts on the phone are listed as a gmail contact (Not a phone contact) as I disabled the sync for the time being. I am curious as to whether the contacts on the phone will be overridden by the contacts on gmail or vise versa. The reason I ask is because I know that when you delete a contact on the phone, go to gmail and edit that contact, and then sync and the contact will still be deleted! So i am afraid that if I sync my phone now with gmail that all the contacts on the gmail will be deleted, or changed to match the current ones in the phone which are not edited. Does anyone have any clue how gmail contacts are meant to sync? There is no master or slave relationship with these phones and gmail, and there does not seem to be a rhyme or reason to which takes precedence in a synchronization.
