I installed the Synergy 484 ROM and love it. When a new version is released can it be updated or does it need to be completely re-installed?

What device are you using? Generally speaking, whenever there's an update to the ROM, yes you do have to do a complete install. Usually however, you don't have to wipe /data so it's not so difficult to do.
