My 2012 Nexus 7 tablet repeatedly freezes up so that the only thing I can do is reboot the device. Then it seems to work for a couple of minutes, only to freeze up again. I tried doing a factory reset from Settings, but it froze up in the process. Then I managed to do a hard reset even though it froze once during the reinstallation of my apps. For a minute, I thought the reset had solved my problem, but no such luck. I've run virus scans with Clean Master and with CM Security, but they found nothing. Jelly Bean is my OS. (Wish I still had KitKat.) Any ideas what the cause of my problem might be?

You could try reflashing a factory image, but as it's 4 years old, the tablet is probably on its last legs anyway (I know mine is).
Also worth pointing out that anything by CM/Cheetah Mobile is going to do more harm than good and you'd be much better off without it.

First off, go into your Settings >> Application manager and locate all those utilities from Cheetah Mobile. For each tap the 'Force stop' button, then the 'Clear data' button, and then the 'Uninstall' button. If you have other alleged maintenance utilities installed you should really give some serious thought as to whether any of them are actually necessary -- always keep in mind that less is better. Android (even Jelly Bean) manages itself fairly well as is, so whenever you try to interfere with its basic functionality there's often a trade-off in stability.

What do you suggest I do now for virus protection? And do you have any advice for (a) clearing available memory, especially RAM, and (b) preventing apps from running in the background and draining the battery?

That's a lengthy but worthwhile read on why you should just leave Android alone to do its own task/memory management.
I don't bother with Anti virus, in most cases if you're only using apps installed via legitimate app stores and not pirating stuff, it's not needed. I've not had any AV App on any of my devices in over 5 years and I've never had any issues. I did use lookout years ago and found it to be pretty unobtrusive and others have said the same so you might want to look in to that.

Try not to equivocate your Nexus tablet with a typical WinXP PC. Virus issues are not a very big threat to Android. The odds of a virus infection are pretty low, with most exploits tied more to people's online activities and only occasionally to operating system weaknesses. Just use common sense and pay attention to what you're doing, don't click on things impulsively or out of simple curiosity.
One of the few circumstances where you might want to actually leave a anti-malware/antivirus utility on your Nexus is if you're frequently exchanging MS Office documents or PDFs with others, and even then it's not so much about your tablet but more of a courtesy by cleansing files you share with other Windows users.
