T-Mobile Comet: Same Catch as G1?

Hey guys: I was just about to buy a T-Mo Comet off of ebay when a horrible thought crossed my mind: I had previously had some bad experiences with the infamous (Read in high falsetto:)"Oh No! I just bought this shiny new G1 off of Ebay/Craiglist/Amazon and I just found out it wont activate without a sim card with a data plan! I don't have one of those!" Routine, Except the phone was a hand me down and my bro decided to reset it. Great.

So, anyway, I was wondering if the whole G1 thing applied to every android phone, or just the G1, as if it does, I have to be sure to NEVER get a new android phone, for fear of wasting hundreds of dollars on a useless brick I cant use.

FYI: Yes, I don't care about data, I have wifi. Also, none of my friends have a T-mo simcard with data to activate the G-1, soooo....

Thanks in advance,
FlamingDogShi

I have a T-mobile Comet and can use wifi without a data plan, I know this because most recent had it on a prepaid plan from walmart decided it wasn't worth it and turned it off, and could still access with wifi.

You mean when you power up a G1 and you are stuck on one screen unless you sign into, or create a new gmail account with a data plan correct? If so I have yet to see another tmobile android do that and I have had %90 of them. THey all just go to the home screen...just set up wifi and sign into your account/browse the market/use the web etc that way

Actually I have had several phones (most of which Samsung Galaxy series, more recent the S II) Anyway for the most part, or 100% (can't remember it being different) they have all required that I setup my gmail account to funtion. That is the core of the Android system, its great actually; I love it anyway. Everything like your contacts follow you.
