Screen protectors aren't really needed unless you are in an area with lots of fine sand. Its using Gorilla Glass. Not even keys would scratch that. Although since glass is technically sand, sand will scratch it,
To emphasise what chanchan said through my own experiences.
When I got my HTC DHD I used it naked. Some of my most significant accidents with it were a screwdriver fell on it (I'm still amazed by how lucky I was because even GG shouldn't have survived that without a scratched) and also had it skitter face down over a tiled floor twice without a scratch. However I end up on building sites alot which means I get sand/grit in my pockets somehow. The last time I put my phone naked into my site pants I ended up with a 'nice' little score on the screen.
It mainly depends on what kind of environment you're in and what's in your pockets with it. Doesn't hurt to use one anyway especially since soome of those on the market are barely noticable...until they get scufffed.
I use a Samsung Galaxy 2 phone and I got a back protector shell case, a screen skin and I carry it in a slide-in leather case, fully protected! Stops all scratches, knocks and accidental drops.......
