T-Mobile LTE plans?

I've only heard of their desire to push HSPA+ to 84Mbps and 168Mbps...I'm sure all that is on hold pending the AT&T fiasco.

Last I heard AT&T pulled out, the FCC or what ever was in charge of the buy out pretty much said no, it wasn't going to let it happen. If it did then they and verizon would hold the cell phone market and wouldn't be fair. This is just what I heard don't know how true it is.

Will higher throughput HSPA+ protocols require new device hardware, or is only a system infastructure/tower issue?

Yes.

When T-Mobile started rolling out HSPA+42 (still only in a few cities) they also announced a modem that could take advantage of the new speed. For some time that was the only HSPA+42 device. However, when the Amaze and Galaxy S2 came out they announced that they were also HSPA+42 enabled. And note that the Galaxy S2 has to be a T-Mobile phone in order to get HSPA+42; if you get an AT&T Galaxy S2, unlock it, and put a T-Mobile SIM in it, it won't work with HSPA+42.

I have a T-Mobile Galaxy S2 and I live in an HSPA+42 city. I rarely see lower than 15 Mbps down, and on occasion I have seen over 30 Mbps down.

I have tried LTE phones in Verizon stores and I get good speeds, but not as good as I get on my T-Mobile Galaxy S2. That, in spite of the fact that LTE is theoretically a bit faster than HSPA+42. But there is something else to consider here. Verizon has several times as many customers as T-Mobile. So their LTE network may be theoretically faster than T-Mobile's HSPA+42, but if there are more people trying to connect to it at the same time you will probably get lower speeds.
