T-mobile Moto X (helpful things to know for new buyer)

OK so up until now all my posts have been about battery life. I am the kind of user that feels what's the point of the bells and whistles if you have to be sheepish about using them (i.e., awesome screen/display and then folks say to turn the brightness down, etc). Well I finally received my Moto X from Motorola Moto Maker Website and I thought to share some early info below.

1) I bought the 16 GB version for T-mobile. This means it will come with an unlocked GSM/SIM, a preinstalled T-mobile nano sim free (just call T-mobile to activate it free), and no T-mobile logos anywhere on the phone and no T-mobile bloatware at all (so if you decide to add custom text at the bottom of the back of the phone it will actually be there and not replaced by a carrier logo).

2) Comes with Android 4.4.3 and actual free space (since OS takes up space) is 11gb. There is no lag and the phone is very smooth and fast. Build quality feels premium and I added custom text on the boot screen and back of the phone---quite nifty.

3) You get 50 gb in addition to the 15gb you already have on Google. So you can store your music and files etc on the cloud. This is free for 2 years and after that there is no charge, you get to keep the files you already uploaded too. You just can't add anything more once the 2 years is up. Unless you pay a fee. Not bad at all.

4) You also get a Motorola Skip for free. Its a bit gimmicky but after trying it out, I actually find myself using it--nothing great though from my view but not ridiculous either.

5) To my relief and delight, the battery life is excellent so far. With 'moderate' use I've gotten 15 hours solid use. And with 'heavy' use I got 10 hours solid use. Its so good, I just don't get why more units did not sell for Motorola---its the best kept secret in the cell phone bizz in my opinion (I don't have any friends who even heard of it!). Note this is with everything turned on except Google Now Cards and screen brightness is at around 75-80%. Screen time is 4-6 hours.

6) Touch less control is very useful. Which is a surprise to me. Keep this in mind though it likes Google Services. So for example if you want it to play a song or music it tends to look at your Google Play for the library (so basically, I started using it for the first time and the free 50GB helps!). Also it does not control functions like turning on/off Bluetooth---which really should be the case. However, it works well and useful for things like time, weather, play a song, navigation/directions, answer trivia like questions, etc.

7) There are complaints about the camera in various posts. I have take only some shots and video and so far, I am happy. I'm sure there is better out there, but these are quite good enough for me (previous phone was an HTC Amaze known for its photo quality). Did not see a huge difference.

Overall: I am very happy with the Moto X and at $299 with free nano card, 50 gb space, free skip, customized looks, and 14 day no hassle return where they even pay shipping------I think it is worth it. Of course it has only been a few days and I will continue to test and update here.

Glad to hear you are enjoying it. I agree with most of what you said. It sounds like your battery life is similar to mine, and much better than the last couple of phones that I have owned. With light use (for example, a quiet weekend), I find I can get over two days.

One note: you get 20,000 songs stored for free (each song can be up to 300MB) in your Play Music Library (not counting songs purchased from the Play Store) and that isn't counted against your Google Drive storage. So you get the 65MB plus 20,000 songs.

It an unlockable bootloader that comes locked. So basically, you can unlock it if you want to.

On past devices I've rooted and installed custom ROMs etc. However, I am quite pleased with the Moto X out of the box and do not plan to root or anything----its pretty much vanilla Android and tends to be supported via OS updates quickly.

Only UI change I made was to install Apex launcher.

Here is Motorola's own instructions to unlock it: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a

Wow. That is insane! A ton of data for free. I am sold on the idea of storing music on the cloud now (before it was about having a large SD Card and carrying the music with me). So basically, I am a newbie convert on storing music in the cloud thanks to Moto X.

Using Google Music Manager on my PC is a breeze too. I just dump music in a folder and it auto updates my Google cloud. Then I create playlists and just tell my phone (verbally) to play one----its a tad bit slow but not too slow to be annoying. Touch less makes sense here for this kind of stuff. Feels magical :).

The XT1053 is SIM unlocked.

Yes, thanks; that I know, but I was asking about the bootloader. I was just trying to clarify that it comes locked but is unlockable, as the original post suggested that it came bootloader unlocked.

Google Music Manager *is* great. I have multiple Macs, with iTunes, iTunes Match, and a bunch of playlists. Any song I buy in iTunes or Google Play is automatically available everywhere within a few minutes, after it all syncs. The only think that iTunes does better now is smart playlists; Google Play Music is pretty bad for that.

Hisense,

May be worth adding that the sim that is included with the moto x is only useable if your creating a prepaid account(or so i have been told by CS reps). If someone is in a situation like me, looking to start a new post-paid account then they should know that the included sim will be of no use to them and that they are better off ordering a sim at the same time they order the phone OR go to the tmobile store when they get it.

I didnt realize the sim was prepaid only and the guy on the phone decided to create my account and ship me one..so im waiting till this afternoon to finally use the moto x Ive had since friday! :(

No no. This is incorrect information. I had a standard sim from T-Mobile on my old phone. I bought the moto x. It came with a smaller nano sim already installed. I called T-Mobile and all they needed was the nano sim number (had to take out the sim to read it). That was it. Its a post paid simple choice plan so not prepaid.

Don't rely on moto x customer rep. Call T-Mobile and ask them. They will confirm nano sim works for postpaid.
