T-Mobile Note 8 date and time resetting when not connected

First time posting to this forum, but I'm need of an answer. I was on backpacking this past weekend and had broken my charging cable for my portable charger thus unable to charge my Note 8. But, I still wanted to take pictures. So, I would turn the phone on/off to preserve the battery.

Being deep in the woods, I did not have T-Mobile service. Every time I restarted the phone, the date and time would revert back to September 5, 2018 2:04pm. I would even turn off 'automatically date and time', after restarting, the phone was back September 5th.

Because I did not want to set the date and time each time I turned on the phone, I left it as the September 5th. I now have many, many photos with the wrong time/date stamp.

Was there a way to have the phone keep the time and date when not connected to the network? I have another backpacking trip coming soon.

I will admit i dont have any issue with time on my tmobile branded note 8, but i do know you can manually change the time as mentioned. It should , in theory, survive a soft boot of the phone.

Without being able to directly look at your phone and test it, i have no idea why sept 5th 2018 shows up. This could be any number of reasons as to why (you could have some rogue app on the phone taking over your time, etc).

Did you try a google search using that particular date and the search terms “note 8”? If this is a widespread issue or even a small issue, it should show up in internet searches.

You may need to stop by a tmobil store and have them look at it or contact Samsung. The phone is stil under a factory warranty.

You can also simply factory reset the phone and re-test the time issue.

Perhaps you should just disable time stamps on your camera app, or install another camera app that allows you more flexibility in the meta data of the captured images...

So this is odd, especially since that date is in the future. If you don't want to just manually set the correct date as @marctronixx suggested, maybe don't go through the process of powering off/on your Note each time you want to use the camera and instead put it into a sleep state like you normally would and bring an external battery with you to keep your phone charged when needed:

Regarding your collection of photos with their incorrect dates, if you're using the Google Photos app on your Note to backup your photos into your Google account, you can use the web interface:
https://photos.google.com
and then open a photo, open 'Info', and you can edit the date and time from there. AFIK you can only do this on each one at a time (not one multiples all at once) and only while using the web interface (the Google Photos app doesn't include this feature). Might not be a viable option since it sounds like you have a lot of them, unless you've got a lot of patience doing repetitive tasks. There are some apps from the Play Store that claim to be able to edit photo EXIF data but I've never played with any of them, and they don't appear to be able to do batch editing either.
