Tab on LHS of screen - multiple app tab?

I had a tab show up that would show what other apps you could pull up...

But now its gone? How do I get it back? Or did I imagine it!

No - you did not imagine it....assuming you're on 4.1.2.

Pull your notification bar down, there should be a Multi-window option.

Once multi window is selected in your settings you can hold the back button while on your homescreens to display/hide the tab.
