Tablet slowing down as I play games

Hi folks,

My tablet is running fine. But is slows down as I am playing games.
When I first start a game (3d opengl games) is runs well but suddenly after about 1 minute the frame rate drops by half. It does this on all opengl games. If I close the game and wait a couple of minutes and try again the frame rate is back up to normal again but will drop back after another minute. Any ideas? Thanks

Thermal throttling?

(Incidentally, I assume you have a Galaxy Tab S2, not a Galaxy S2 (2011 phone)).

Sorry yes its a tablet. So you mean it slows down as it gets hot? Can anything be done to restrict this? Thanks for your reply.

Not much - if it is throttling then it's something the system does to protect the battery. If you were to root the device and install a custom kernel you might be able to adjust the throttling parameters yourself, or adjust the cpu voltages so that it heats less quickly, but that requires some amount of technical knowledge, and depends on someone having produced a suitable kernel and configuration tool for that particular device (all such mods are device-specific, and I don't know what exists for this device).

You can test the theory by installing GSam Battery Monitor (or similar), which produces a graph of battery temperature against time and activity. If that shows a rapid temperature rise when you start playing, which then levels off after about a minute, then that would suggest thermal limitation. I don't know at what temperature this should happen with that device, but as it's not good for lithium batteries to operate above about 40-45 celsius I'd expect it to level off by or before then.

Many thanks - I will try an app to monitor heat as you suggest. It makes sense.

I also have a Tab SWEET and games on it generally all run smoothly (except the PSP emulator as it's not optimized). However, if you have too many apps and games open and the tablet is getting a bit hot those may be causes to it.
