Taking Number to T-Mobile

I have a somewhat unique situation here - I am an additional $9.99/month line on a family plan, my contract doesn't end for awhile, but I want to leave this plan and take my number with me to T-Mobile; I've only stayed on family plan to keep unlimited data which I will soon lose by upgrading phones.

So if they want to charge a ridiculous amount for ending contract early, I'll just continuing paying my family the $10 to end that contract and move on. My question is if my current number is stuck on Verizon through the contract, or if I can make it a different number and take mine with me immediately?

Thanks

It all depends on alot of factors.

Who owns the phone number? VZW or another cell phone provider? If you change your phone number and it's a VZW number it will go back to their bank of available numbers that they own. It will also most likely go into an aging status on the existing account for the current AO to get it back. If your # was ported into VZW it will go back to the original service provider when you do a MDN Change. You need to call customer service to clarify with them if your number is an RE (original VZW #) or a PI (port in).

You can only port an active line of service from VZW to another service provider. Per your customer agreement with VZW, porting your # is considered to be a disconnect. The disconnect will go into effect at the end of your bill cycle and you will be charged any ETF if applicable.

There are people who will be willing to work with you. Releasing the number will require them to actually do some work, but it doesn't always end in tears and an ETF. As long as you make it very clear that you were simply a member of the plan and you plan to continue your financial commitment to them there should not be an issue. There will likely still be a fee of some kind involved, even if it's just a 15 dollar number change fee (since you'll be needing a new number on that line).

If VZW doesnt' own the number it will go back to the OSP once the MDN Change is done. You can't port a non active VZW # to another carrier either.
