taller vs wider screens

hi all. I have been noting that sony's phones have a taller screen, as opposed to htc's wider screen, even if diagonally they're same (e.g. 3.5 in). does this have an impact on you choosing a phone? for reference see Sony's xperia U vs HTC's Desire C.
