Taming Google Contacts

I have decided to stop fighting and allow Google to control my entire life.

I've changed my phone over to having my usual, most-used gmail account as my phone's primary account. Everything is syncing and combining and consulting and talking behind my back.

Now I need to get control of my darn contact list and I'm not sure how. I don't want my phone contact list to have every person I've ever emailed or called or am FB friends with because we went to elementary school together but haven't seen each other in umpteen years. I want my phone list in my phone to reflect the people I actually contact.

On the other hand, there are people in my contacts list who I might email but don't need to have in my phone list. I still want them to pop up when I'm typing in their email address.

Additionally, I have contacts who are currently email-only, but who might convert to phone friends as well. A perfect example is the list of other parents at my children's preschool. Right now they are mostly just email folks (and I don't even have phone numbers for most). But as I make friends with other parents I'll want to have their numbers in my phone contact list.

Does this make sense? I am sure there is a way to do it, and I just haven't figured it out yet.
