Taxpayers paying for a prisoner's sex change operation?!

MoodyBlues

Compassion is cool!
At first I thought this was an April Fool's Day joke--then I realized that was YESTERDAY. (It's my daughter's birthday, so I really do know that!) But, see, this strikes me as so incredible, I just couldn't believe it was real: A judge has ordered that the taxpayers of California--which includes me--must pay the ~$100,000 for a prisoner's sex change operation! Basically, this man--who wants to be a woman--is in prison for murder, and the judge thinks the operation is necessary for his/her well being:

SOURCE

A federal judge Thursday ordered that a California prison inmate be allowed to undergo gender reassignment surgery.

Should the operation occur, it will be the first in state prison history and cost as much as $100,000, according to Joyce Hayhoe, spokeswoman for California Corrections Health Care Services.

U.S. District Court Judge Jon Tigar in San Francisco ruled that Michelle-Lael Norsworthy's constitutional rights were being violated if the inmate’s “serious medical need” was not met, according to the ruling.

Norsworthy, 51, is housed at Mule Creek State Prison in Ione. Norsworthy, born Jeffrey Bryan Norsworthy, was convicted of murder, according to the Associated Press...

Thoughts on this?

I can think of many things the gov can spend $100k on. feeding kids.. paying for elderly care..

this will start a very bad trend...
individuals that cant afford sex changes... will now consider the option to....
1. Live life as is.. depressed.. angry .. going crazy as the wrong sex
or
2. commit a major crime to be sentence to a longer time in prison. then get sex change on tax payer's money.

after the sex change.... which man/woman prison would that individuals go?

It's weird, because I'm very pro-whatever-floats-your-boat (as long as it's legal), so I have no issue with gender reassignment surgery in general. But...I don't know...something about the taxpayers footing the bill just hits me WRONG!

Well, the person undergoing the sex change is a criminal. And the taxpayer's money can be better utilized, as Dan suggested before.

Fed Court paying for sex change.. confirming the need for sex change for correct a person's issues...

does that not sort of confirms the same sex marriage?

Buy me a couple of Jack in the Box's monster tacos. I will remove the appendage he so desperately seeks gone. Will it be a sterile environment? No. Will it be painful? More than likely. But hey, he can imagine what it is like to give birth. And that is something we all can cherish.

When you're convicted of a felony and incarcerated, you lose most rights. No way should tax payers pay for a sex change operation. I can't believe it was even proposed. I don't know; maybe be it would help his/her sex life while in prison, though.
