On my old phone, when I received a text message it would announce ( verbally ) " you have a new message ' until I opened the message. Is there an app that will do the same? thanks

Too many apps out there to answer this globally but check your settings in the app. I know handcent has this option and on my phone it will also read it outloud for me.
