Tethering is here!

I for one, have had no trouble using 100s of GBs of tethering with absolutely no tethering plan.
EDIT: Just a FYI I am on prepaid too, so when I say no tethering plan, I mean it.

I guess this is good for people who have home internet already, however those people should have little need for a truly unlimited plan.

I have the $70 unlimited prepaid. That mean I can turn on my hotspot now and it will all free?
Use firefox and add/change your (about:config) general.useragent.override to "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/534.24 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/11.0.696.34 Safari/534.24" or some other phone user agent string and yep.

There detection is User Agent String, outside of that they don't do anything else that I have noticed.

I might have a better solution for you.

I sign up with Private Internet Access. They allow up to 5 device to be on at the same time. So I use it on my computer at home and on my phone.

They make an app for the Android too. Just fire it up before you tether. They cant see what is going after that. No need to do any magic string. Yes you do loose some speed, but not that much.

There are other VPN service out there. Just google it n find your best price.

I don't use the tethering that much. Only when I go on vacation or at the airport. Even that, I don't do streaming.

But I do avg 11 GB a month because I record Rush and Shawn Hannity on the radio using Tunein Radio Pro off my radio station. When I drive 70 miles each way, I listen to them streaming Bluetooth from my phone to my car audio. It makes life wonderful. I never get Rush'ed into any judgement.

But you are right. Tether is not meant for internet substitute at home!

Soon, I will be moving to a apartment. :)
Then I will be able to get comcast 25mbps at about half the cost of t-mobile unlimited.

I look forward to the consistently high speeds and low pings of real home internet! :)

I am very confused.

I have the unlimited $70 prepaid plan.

It says hot spot is free up to 2.5GB.

1. Specifically I ask how does it know which 2.5 GB of data I use if it is my phone or tethering? I ask the CSR how does it work. She have no clue.

Below is capture from my account:

Plan details : $70 Unlimited 4G Web, Talk & Text
Unlimited Nationwide Voice| Unlimited Nationwide Messaging |Unlimited 4G data* | Includes 2.5GB of Smartphone Mobile HotSpot (tethering) at no extra charge|Rate Plan Charge excluding features: $70.00 per month.

The same way that they block unauthorized tethering

I don't get what you mean.

I have use 11GB of data on my phone.

I use Hot Spot yesterday and it work on my other phone and my laptop.

But I have no idea how they keep track of the 2.5GB of hotspot data.

Let me know if you do.

I do see my hotspot usage now. The only way to see it now is install the Tmo app on your phone. You cant see from a computer MyAccount webpage. Be sure you get the right app that is from them.

It is indeed 2.5gb of free hotspot beside your phone data! I goota love Tmo!

I read Tmo is slowly chipping away at AT&T too!

But is this a good thing if too many people come to Tmo? It would slow the network down.

My friend said it is unAmerican to use Tmo because it is a foreign company.

I am just voting with my money. :-)

I wonder if they would have said the same thing to those using Verizon because up until very recently, the wireless division was roughly half owned by Vodafone (UK)

Apparently you now get a very small amount of tethering on the $30 dollar plan. I just checked my account status via the T-Mobile app and it says I get 100MB of tethering allowance.
